Can I afford to quit my job? A financial review checklist

Review the cash, costs and unknowns before deciding. This checklist helps prepare a temporary period without work; it cannot establish that a permanent exit or retirement is funded.

0 of 8 items reviewed. This is a review aid, not an approval score.

Checks stay in this page and reset when you leave or reload. Nothing is saved or submitted.

A positive balance is only one part of the decision.

A calculation may show money left at a chosen date while omitting an annual bill, a change in cover or a later first paycheck. The right next action is to identify those uncertainties, not to treat a green number or completed checklist as permission to resign.

Keep a record of the source for each important figure: an account balance, a bill, an employer confirmation or an estimate you still need to check. If a figure is uncertain, test a less favorable version. Do not rely on a tax, benefit or pension assumption inferred by this page.

Follow the next unresolved question.

“I do not know what I will spend.” Build the monthly budget and separate known extras.

“I know my costs, but not how long I can take.” Estimate whole months covered by your savings.

“I have six months in mind.” Compare worked six-month budgets before entering your own plan.

“What if pay starts later?” Build a return-to-paycheck timeline.

Keep emergency money distinct from planned spending.

A planned break and an unexpected expense are different uses of money. Choose what you want protected, and do not also include that same amount as money available for the break. If you budget extra months for the job search, avoid protecting another amount for exactly those same months unless you deliberately want an additional cushion.

The CFPB emergency-fund guide distinguishes money set aside for unplanned expenses and notes that the amount depends on the person’s situation. This checklist does not set a required number of months for you.

Confirm arrangements with the people who control them.

Ask your employer about final pay dates and what changes when work stops. Confirm insurance and other contract arrangements with their providers. Check local tax, pension and benefit questions with appropriate official sources or a qualified professional. An unpaid leave agreement and a resignation may have different consequences; this page does not determine those consequences.

For a wider planning sequence, read the career-break preparation guide. For the difference between short-term cash and longer-term assumptions, see how savings and living costs shape an outlook.
